Writing the Perfect Job Description
Writing an exciting job description is the best way to ensure you receive qualified candidates. In today’s digital age, the length of the job description is more important than ever. It must look good on mobile devices because about 43% of people use their smartphones to search for new jobs[1]. Keep the description short and sweet while not leaving out important details.
Length is key because the average person will only spend between 49.2 and 76.7 seconds reading a job description[2]. Follow these helpful tips and start seeing better and more relevant applicants!
Job Title and Location
The first thing an applicant wants to know is the title of the position and where it is located. Providing this information at the top of your job description, in bold, is a great way to make that information stand out. Make sure your job title as specific as possible to ensure the right people are applying.
Strong Introduction
Be sure to open with a strong, eye-catching statement explaining expectations for the position, any required certifications or skills, and details on what makes your company unique and fun to work for. Your introduction should only be about three to four sentences, grabbing their attention and enticing them to keep reading and apply.
Required vs. Preferred Qualifications
Letting the applicant know which qualifications are required and which are preferred will help you gain a proper candidate pipeline. Emphasizing any required skills with bold lettering will help attract their eyes to that statement. Using the words “required” and “preferred” can also help them determine if they will be a good fit.
Responsibility of Duties
Applicants want to know what they will be doing on a day-to-day basis at. Be as specific as possible so that they can fully understand what they will be doing, if they are able to do it, and if it will make them happy.
About Your Company’s Culture
The most exciting thing about a company is their culture; what makes them different and why a candidate should work there. Providing this information will help give the applicant an idea of what it will be like working for your company. Also, including information about health insurance, benefits, and vacation packages can help them make a decision.
